Q: I don't follow blogs but I like the idea and I wanna play with you guys.
A: You can follow from twitter.
Q: Yay! I figured out the sample!!! What now?
A: You may submit a sampled creation of your own doing, preferably uploaded on soundcloud as it is pretty useful for embedding, then let me know where it's at. If you don't have and don't want a soundcloud account, upload the content on a filesharing site and contact me with the info.
If you don't toy around with sounds, you can forfeit your turn and I'll add a new one submitted by anyone who wants to partake.
Q: I want to partake / submit a sampled creation.
A: ▲ Read the previous Q&A dude (or duderette) ▲
Q: This is haaaaaaaaard.
A: (that’s what she said!) I will provide clues at intervals, at first fairly obscure and enigmatic and then more and more obvious as we go along. Updates & clues will be posted on twitter.
On this note…
Q: Any guidelines for someone who wants to submit material / sampled creations?
A: Please try and not be too obvious or too obscure. We want to scratch our heads and wonder and dig around for answers, but if you pick a recording from some djembe jam in Ivory Coast made in 1962 by an anthropologist, I won’t post it. Also, try and not bend the original so out of shape as no one would recognize it ever. Basically, let’s try to keep it interesting and fun if we can.
Addendum: a friend made me realize that the default setting for a lot of artists who use sampling as a compositional tool is to twist and bend sound out of shape enough to be unrecognizable. So fair enough, if that's the road you want to take, have at it. However, we expect you to come up with clues that will make it worth our while and as detailed a rendition of how you tweaked the original material, deal?

Q: Ok, maybe I wanna contribute, but what’s in it for me?
A: The fun of mesmerizing and puzzling dozens of folks? For a start… And then I guess a little bit of exposure too, you can send me a blurb (500ish words) about who you are, what you do, links to your official website, upcoming projects, etc. and it will be added to the post of your sampled creation. Also, if you want, you can create a youtube video or write a detailed description of what you did with the original, once someone has provided the answer I can link it in the original post and on twitter, think of it as a cool educational tool and a way to demonstrate your prowess! N.B. Once the sample has been guessed, a short comparison video (about 30 seconds of your creation & then the original) will be posted on youtube. (if the material is available)

Q: Do I keep ownership of my material displayed on GUESS THE SAMPLE?
A: Sure dude (or duderette) but really, once everybody knows the sample you used, would you really try and turn a profit with that piece and risk a lawsuit? Unless you used public domain recordings or have an arrangement with the original artist... It's your call.
Q: Hey, I never authorized you to sample my material or distribute it or … copyrights, man!
A: All material displayed on GUESS THE SAMPLE is NOT made available for download, reproduction or public representation through GUESS THE SAMPLE. Furthermore, no transactions or profit should take place on or with the accord of GUESS THE SAMPLE. The intent of the blog is like any other quiz, educational and fun. However, if you feel like any material displayed is an infringement of your rights as a copyright holder or legal representative of a copyright holder, please contact me and your material will courteously be removed swiftly from GUESS THE SAMPLE.
Q: Can you make room for my label on that little box on your page? you know, on the right hand side... What about my blog / magazine?
A: If one of your artist was featured on GUESS THE SAMPLE, sure thing. I'll leave up to twenty active links on there and retire them chronologically afterwards. (the older ones go first) So basically, if you want your label link to stay up there, get artists to feature & submit material pretty often!
For a blog or magazine, it has to be relevant to the content of GUESS THE SAMPLE.
